I slept on a Tempurpedic foam pillow for more than 20 years, and I have returned every single replacement I ordered after it started going flat. Too hard, too soft, too expensive. So when I say I have tested the best memory foam pillows, I mean I slept on them in all three positions for at least two weeks each, wrote down the result the next morning, and paid for them myself.

That is the whole method. Side position for Tom, my husband, who has been a side sleeper his entire life and notices loft the first night. Back position for me, CPAP mask and all, on an adjustable bed. Stomach position for whatever guest lands in the spare room. Two weeks minimum per pillow, and a 2 a.m. wake-up check on anything that claims to sleep cool, because cooling is the most lied-about word in bedding.

Amortize it. A pillow is a five-year purchase, not a $30 impulse, and the $100 pillow that lasts is the $20-a-year pillow. Here is what made this year's list.

Best Overall: SUPA MODERN Cooling Bed Pillows, 2 Pack

This two-pack is the set I hand to almost anybody, because it stops being a guessing game. The fill is shredded gel memory foam instead of one solid slab, so you can unzip the cover and take fill out until the pillow stops shoving your head uphill. Tom pulled a handful out for the side position and stopped waking up with a kink. I left mine fuller for back sleeping.

A queen set of two with a washable removable cover, which sounds like a small thing until you have thrown away a pillow because the casing gave out. The cover unzips, the fill is replaceable, and the whole thing survives a real wash instead of pilling into a rag.

On the cooling claim, this is one of the few that held up when I woke up warm at 2 a.m. The gel fill and the breathable casing did more than a "cooling cover" printed on a pillow whose fill still cooks you. It is not icy. It is simply not hot, which is the honest version of what most people actually want.

As a value, this is the easiest call on the list. Two adjustable pillows for less than what one specialty pillow costs, and both sides of the bed get a real pillow.

Best for Neck Support: Cloud Pillow, Cloud Align Pillow

This is the one for the back sleeper who wakes up with a stiff neck, and it is the pillow that worked with my CPAP mask instead of against it. The shape is contoured rather than flat, so there is a raised section that fills the curve under your neck and a lower center where your head rests. When my chin drops, my airway changes, and I feel it in the morning. With this one, my head stayed level and the mask seal held.

It is memory foam, so it has that slow sink that made me fall in love with foam in the first place. It is not adjustable, which is the honest trade-off. If you want to add fill or take it out, this is not that pillow. What it does instead is come shaped correctly for one position and do it well.

Back sleepers and side sleepers with a long neck will get along with it. Stomach sleepers will hate it, because anything with a raised contour puts your head up at an angle your lower back pays for. If you flip onto your stomach at 3 a.m., skip it.

Best Body Pillow: WhatsBedding Memory Foam Body Pillow with Cover

A body pillow is not a luxury if you sleep on your side. It is what keeps your top hip from rolling forward and dragging your lower back with it. This one is a long bed pillow built from memory foam with a cover included, which means it holds a shape instead of folding in half the second you put weight on it.

That is the difference between this and a $15 stuffed body pillow. Cheap ones go flat and lumpy along the length, and you spend the night chasing the fill. Foam keeps its heft, so your knee and hip stay stacked the way they should. I put it along my back on the side-sleeping nights and between my knees on others.

The cover comes with it, which I appreciated, because buying the pillow and then discovering you need a $25 case is a special kind of annoying. It is the pillow I would hand to a side sleeper with hip pain, or to anyone who has been told to stop sleeping on their stomach and does not know what to do with their arms yet.

It sleeps warm compared with the cooling options here. Foam does that. If you run hot, the next pillow is the one for you.

Best Firm Body Pillow for Hot Sleepers: Rainmr Firm Memory Foam Body Pillow

This is the firm, long, 20x54 body pillow, and the word firm is doing real work here. It is built for side sleepers and for people who sleep hot, with an adjustable fill and two pillowcases instead of one. If you have bought a "firm" pillow off Amazon and had it arrive soft and thin, you know why that matters.

Two pillowcases is not a gimmick. One goes on the pillow, and the second covers you while the first is in the laundry, so you are never left with a bare foam body pillow for the night. If you have ever slept with a naked foam pillow because the case was in the wash, you understand.

The cooling side of the claim comes through better than most, and I say that as the warm-sleeper test in this house. The adjustable fill also means it can be a firm hugger for one person and a flatter bolster for another, which is more flexibility than a solid body pillow gives you.

It is a commitment, though. It is a fifty-four inch pillow and it will take a side of your bed. If your bed is a queen and your partner is not on board, measure first. I mean that.

How I tested

Every pillow here got at least two weeks of real nights before it made this list. I did not test it for an afternoon and write a review.

Side position: Tom, lifelong side sleeper, checking whether the pillow filled the gap between his ear and his shoulder without going flat by 3 a.m. Back position: me, on a CPAP, checking whether my neck stayed supported and my chin stayed level. Stomach position: the guest bed, where I rolled face down and checked whether my head was cranked up at an angle my lower back would complain about the next day.

I logged neck pain every morning, and I noted every time I woke up hot at 2 a.m. I checked loft at the start and again after weeks of use. I opened the zippers to see how much fill was actually inside, because cheap "adjustable" pillows are sometimes half empty by month six. And I looked at stitching and casing, because "hotel quality" is a marketing phrase until the pillow survives a wash.

Analysis and test results

What separates these four is one question, and it is not firmness. It is whether the pillow lets you set your own height.

The adjustable pillows won on that. The SUPA MODERN set and the Rainmr body pillow both let you remove fill, which means the same pillow can serve a side sleeper who needs loft and a back sleeper who needs less. The Cloud Pillow is fixed, but it is fixed in the right shape for one job, and it does that job well enough that I kept it.

The body pillows are a different category, and the split between them is heat. Solid foam supports well and sleeps warm. The WhatsBedding is the better support pillow of the two. The Rainmr is the better hot-sleeper pillow, and it is firmer.

Cooling claims, ranked honestly: the SUPA MODERN set and the Rainmr both passed my 2 a.m. check. The solid foam body pillow does not pretend otherwise. A cooling cover on hot fill is still hot fill, so read the fill, not the fabric name.

Nothing here arrived plump. Everything came vacuum sealed and flat as a pancake, and everything needed two days to breathe before it was worth sleeping on. I gave them an afternoon instead on the first one, like always, and regretted it by midnight.

The memory foam pillow reference table

This is the table I keep for friends who text me asking what to buy, and it is the same one I use when I test. Loft, fill, and cooling are what matter. Price is not the story, the lifespan is.

One rule that belongs in the table even though it is not a product: stomach sleepers need the flattest, thinnest pillow in the house. If you sleep on your stomach and you wake up with a sore neck, the fix is usually less pillow, not a more expensive one. Pull fill out of the SUPA MODERN set and you are most of the way there.

Should you buy the SUPA MODERN Cooling Bed Pillows?

Yes, and it is the easiest yes on this list. Two adjustable shredded foam pillows, a washable cover, and a cooling claim that survived a warm sleeper at 2 a.m. It covers side, back, and stomach sleepers, which means it works for a household with more than one kind of sleeper in it. Unzip it, take fill out, and it stops being a compromise pillow for anybody.

Should you buy the Cloud Pillow?

Buy it if you sleep on your back, wake up with a stiff neck, or wear a CPAP. It held my head level and my chin up, and it is the pillow I stopped noticing at night, which is the highest compliment I can give one. Skip it if you are a stomach sleeper, or if you want to adjust the fill, because you cannot.

Should you buy the WhatsBedding body pillow?

Yes, if hip or knee pain is your problem and you sleep on your side. It is solid foam, so it supports instead of folding, and the cover coming included saves you a surprise purchase. Just know it sleeps warm. If you run hot, spend the extra and get the Rainmr instead.

Should you buy the Rainmr body pillow?

Yes, if you sleep hot and want firm support in one long pillow. The adjustable fill and the second pillowcase are the reasons it edged out the cheaper body pillow for me. It is firm, it is fifty-four inches long, and it will claim a side of your bed. Measure before you commit, then amortize the cost over five years and it stops looking expensive.
